The Pennsylvania State Senate approved legislation yesterday to create a state licensure process for medical imaging professionals in Pennsylvania.
Senate Bill 1334 would create a consistent statewide licensing structure for professionals who perform medical imaging and radiation therapy procedures.
Accordimg to Republican State Senator Lynda Culver, “Senate Bill 1334 is about patient safety. Medical imaging plays an essential role in diagnosing and treating patients, and Pennsylvanians should be able to feel confident that the person performing these procedures meets clear and consistent professional standards.”
“Medical imaging” includes highly technical procedures such as x-rays, MRIs, ultrasounds, CT scans and radiation therapy. While Pennsylvania currently regulates facilities and equipment through the Department of Environmental Protection, individuals operating radiation-producing equipment are currently not licensed by the Commonwealth.
