Before setting off fireworks to celebrate America’s 250th birthday, police departments throughout our area want citizens to remember that local Ordinances and State Laws are in place to govern fireworks use. Aerial fireworks may still be illegal in your neighborhood so check with your local authorities before lighting any fireworks. Only professionals may set off large aerial fireworks and must have a valid permit. On the other hand, “consumer fireworks” are authorized for use by civilians, and can be bought at typical roadside stands, but are regulated by local regulations. Consumer fireworks must be used a minimum of 150 feet away from an occupied structure, which is half the length of a football field. Keep in mind that common sense and common courtesy are the best approaches when using legal fireworks. If you notice fireworks being used outside the provisions of Pennsylvania law, call police to have them respond to firework violations and possibly file charges against violators.
