LANCASTER – Today is the Juneteenth holiday. It commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. It was June 19, 1865 when Major General George Granger ordered the final enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation in Galveston Bay, Texas at the end of the Civil War. In 2021, President Biden signed legislation making Juneteenth a federal holiday. Federal, state, and local government offices have the day off, most banking institutions will be closed, and there will be no home mail delivery today.
