HARRISBURG – The PA Senate approved a bill establishing a statewide licensure system for electrical contractors and electricians. Senate Bill 1260 would create a uniform statewide framework for licensing electrical contractors and electricians, replacing the current patchwork system that requires workers and businesses to navigate differing municipal requirements across the state. PA is one of only a handful of states that does not require statewide licensure for electricians. The measure is designed to improve workplace safety, reduce injuries and fatalities among electrical workers, and help ensure consumers receive high-quality electrical installations that meet professional standards. It also authorizes reciprocity agreements with states that have substantially similar licensing requirements, making it easier for qualified contractors and electricians to work across state lines. The bill has received bipartisan support and is backed by both union and non-union electrical contractors across the state. The bill now moves to the PA House.
