LANCASTER – With very high temperatures and elevated humidity levels in the forecast for the next several days, local police departments are reminding everyone that oppressive heat can be dangerous for people and pets. Officials are asking the public to keep these essential safety tips in mind. Stay hydrated by regularly drinking plenty of water, but avoid drinking alcohol and sugary drinks. Also, wear lightweight, light-colored, and loose-fitting clothes. During peak hours between 10am and 4pm, don’t do any strenuous outdoor activities. Stay cool by spending time in air-conditioned buildings or shaded areas. Never leave anyone or any pets inside a closed vehicle. Make sure to check on children, older adults, and neighbors who don’t have access to air conditioning. Oppressive heat can also result in heat illness, such as heat exhaustion with symptoms like heavy sweating, dizziness, nausea, and weakness. Likewise, a person may be suffering heat stroke when they show signs of confusion, loss of consciousness, hot or dry skin, and a rapid pulse. If you or someone you know is experiencing any of those symptoms, call 911 immediately!
