HARRISBURG – Sen. Doug Mastriano of Adams & Franklin Counties plans to introduce the Sam Worley Elderly Tax Relief Act which will provide full property tax relief to long-term elderly homeowners. The proposal would exempt qualifying seniors from paying school, county, and municipal property taxes on their primary residence, helping older Pennsylvanians remain in their homes after decades of tax payments. The bill is named in honor of Sam Worley, a World War II veteran, who paid property taxes into his 100th year of life. Under the measure, homeowners 75 years of age or older, have lived in PA for at least 10 consecutive years, and have owned and occupied their home for at least 10 consecutive years would qualify for a full property tax exemption on their primary residence. It ensures surviving spouses may continue to receive the exemption, regardless of age, so long as they continue to live in the home as their primary residence. Mastriano says no senior who has paid taxes for decades should have to fear losing their home due to rising property taxes. A co-sponsorship memo seeking support of the proposal is being circulated.
