HARRISBURG – Rep. Jason Ortitay of Allegheny & Washington Counties plans to introduce legislation requiring individuals convicted of homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence to provide monetary restitution in the form of financial support for the minor children or dependents of a parent or legal guardian killed as a result of their actions. The proposal seeks to ensure that children who lose a parent or guardian because of a preventable tragedy receive meaningful financial support from the individual responsible for that loss. Similar legislation has already been enacted in Kentucky, Tennessee, and Texas, and comparable measures have been introduced in over a dozen other states. A co-sponsorship memo is being circulated seeking support of the proposal.
