HARRISBURG – Allegheny County Rep. Emily Kinkead plans to introduce legislation requiring insurance companies to cover medical marijuana in PA. On April 22, the U.S. Department of Justice and the Drug Enforcement Administration officially reclassified marijuana from a Schedule I to a Schedule III controlled substance. The change specifically applies to marijuana products approved by the FDA and those subject to a state-issued medical license. Kinkead says federal law now formally recognizes that marijuana has medical value and the new rules allow for a more streamlined process for entities holding state medical marijuana licenses. It is also necessary for other entities to recognize the medical value of marijuana and treat it accordingly. She is circulating a co-sponsorship memo seeking support for the proposal.
