YORK COUNTY – Authorities in York County rescued a person yesterday afternoon who had fallen into an 8’ trench in New Salem Borough. First arriving units found a subject who had fallen to the bottom of the trench and was unable to get out due to their injuries. It was confirmed that there was no collapse or was the subject buried. Since a trench box was not in place, emergency crews placed trench panels and pneumatic struts to secure the soil walls so there was no threat of a collapse. Once the trench was secured, technicians entered the trench, treated, and packaged the subject who was then extricated using a rope system. The person was transferred to EMS and transported to a local trauma center with non-life-threatening injuries. Extrication was completed within 90 minutes of the first arriving unit.
