HARRISBURG – Gov. Josh Shapiro has ordered flags on Commonwealth facilities, public buildings, and grounds to be lowered to half-staff in honor of Allegheny County Rep. Matt Gergely, who died Sunday at the age of 45. Shapiro said he is heartbroken for Gergely’s wife, their two young sons, his colleagues on both sides of the aisle, and the community he loved and proudly served in his hometown of McKeesport. The governor added that in this moment of mourning, let us come together to honor his legacy, carry on the work that mattered most to him, and look out for his family. The Democrat lawmaker suffered a medical emergency requiring hospitalization in the days before the House convened its two-year session earlier this month. A special election to fill the PA House seat held by Gergely is expected to be scheduled at a future date. His death leaves that PA House at 101 Democrats and 101 Republicans.
