HARRISBURG – Legislation which would establish a driver’s license designation for first responders and retired first responders in PA is forthcoming from Sen. Tracy Pennycuick of Berks & Montgomery Counties. Across PA, first responders serve on the front lines giving back to their community every single day by responding to emergencies 24/7 and putting their lives on the line every time they put on the uniform. For many first responders, service does not end when the shift is over. Even when off duty, they carry the training, the readiness, and the instinct to step forward in an emergency. Pennycuick’s proposal will require PennDOT to issue a driver’s license or ID card to a qualified applicant that clearly indicates if they are a first responder. Qualified applicants include employed, volunteer, and retired first responders. A co-sponsorship memo seeking support is being circulated.
