LANCASTER COUNTY – Crews battled a Sunday morning apartment fire in Lancaster County. Units responded at 7:50 a.m. to the 1600 block of Judie Lane at The Village of Lancaster Green Apartments. The fire was traced to a burning battery-powered electric unicycle stored in the living room of Apartment B and was moved to the hallway. A child in the apartment alerted his sleeping mother after detecting a burning odor. The apartment did not have a functioning smoke detector. The mother’s boyfriend investigated and discovered their electric unicycle on fire in the living room. While the mother called 911, the boyfriend attempted to activate the building’s manual fire alarm pull station, which did not function. He then removed the burning device to the hallway and attempted to extinguish it using a dry chemical extinguisher mounted outside the apartment door. All five occupants of the apartment -along with two dogs – escaped safely. The fire was contained to Apartment B and the shared vestibule. Damage was limited primarily to the apartment’s contents.
