YORK – York City Mayor Michael Helfrich announced a change in plans Tuesday by declaring he would be running for re-election. Helfrich’s bid for a third term comes after York City Police Commissioner Michael Muldrow announced on Sunday that he would be withdrawing from his campaign for mayor in the aftermath of the UPMC Memorial Hospital shooting, although Muldrow stated that he was stepping down from his candidacy due to the toll it would take on his family and so that he could remain focused on being police commissioner. Helfrich had been an open and avid supporter of Muldrow’s campaign, and with Muldrow no longer an option as his successor, Helfrich decided to re-enter the race. The sitting mayor said in a statement to the public on Tuesday, “I’m not going to stop being Mayor of York City until I find someone that I trust with leading York City, or until you vote me out.” Helfrich was first sworn in as mayor in 2018 and won re-election for 2022.
