HARRISBURG – Pennsylvania House Republican Leader Jesse Topper offered a critical response to Shapiro’s executive order Wednesday. While Shapiro’s priority with the order is to fill job vacancies in state agencies quickly in order to provide quicker and more efficient services to Pennsylvanians, Topper, on the other hand, suggested that the first item for consideration should be whether or not these vacancies even need to be filled and are good uses of taxpayer money. Topper recommended that, “We should continue exploring state-specific ways to get our fiscal house in order to avoid the need for significant cuts or tax increases in the coming years,” in an official statement regarding Shapiro’s order and how it could interfere with addressing the state’s budget challenges. Topper also added that former federal employees should still be encouraged to look for work in the private sector instead of just taking the now-cleared path to a commonwealth job.
