HARRISBURG – With high temperatures and stifling humidity for the upcoming weekend, the American Red Cross of Greater PA is offering steps you can take to stay safe.

Hot vehicles can be deadly. Never leave children or pets in your vehicle as the inside temperature can quickly reach 120 degrees.

Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids, but avoid drinks with caffeine or alcohol.

Check on family, friends, and neighbors who do not have air conditioning, who spend most of their time alone or who are more likely to be affected by the heat.

If you don’t have air conditioning, seek relief during the warmest part of the day in places like malls, libraries, schools, and theaters.

Wear loose fitting, light weight, light colored clothing.

Slow down, stay indoors, avoid strenuous exercise during the hottest part of day.

Postpone outdoor games and activities.

Use a buddy system when working in excessive heat. Take frequent breaks if you work outdoors.

Check on animals frequently to ensure that they are not suffering from the heat. Make sure they have plenty of cool water and shade.
