HARRISBURG — State Rep. Joe Ciresi, of Montgomery County, has introduced legislation aimed at strengthening privacy protections as smart glasses become more widely used across Pennsylvania.
The proposal, H.B. 2603, would require all smart glasses manufactured, sold, or used in the Commonwealth to include a visual indicator that alerts others when the device is recording audio or video.
Ciresi said the measure is intended to establish “common-sense privacy safeguards” while allowing the technology to continue developing.
Ciresi noted that the ability to instantly record and share audio and video could be misused to secretly record individuals or facilitate stalking, harassment, intimidation, or unauthorized facial-recognition surveillance.
Under the proposal, smart glasses would be subject to requirements consistent with Pennsylvania’s existing wiretapping and recording laws.
Ciresi said the legislation is designed to update Pennsylvania’s privacy protections to address emerging technology without creating burdensome restrictions on consumers.
