HARRISBURG — State Rep. Andrea Verobish, a Blair County Republican, has introduced legislation that would eliminate Pennsylvania’s requirement for individuals to obtain a concealed carry permit before carrying a firearm in a vehicle.
Under current state law, a concealed carry permit is required for individuals who wish to carry a concealed firearm on their person or transport a loaded firearm in a vehicle. Pennsylvania law generally allows the open carry of firearms without a permit, but that exemption does not extend to carrying a firearm inside a vehicle.
Verobish said the proposal is intended to align vehicle carry regulations with the state’s existing open-carry laws.
“The right to own and bear arms is a fundamental constitutional right,” Verobish said in announcing the legislation. “Law-abiding citizens should not be required to obtain government permission before exercising that right while on the road.”
The measure, House Bill 2599, has been referred to the Pennsylvania House Judiciary Committee for review and consideration.
