HARRISBURG – Lehigh County Rep. Jeanne McNeill has introduced a bill that would update who can legally officiate marriages in PA, effectively ending the question of legality regarding marriages officiated by someone ordained online. According to McNeill, a marriage was declared invalid in York County a few years ago because it had been officiated by a person ordained online. House Bill 485 would make clear that PA recognizes the sanctity of unions and the religious rights and freedoms of its residents. Any individual of a religious body that is authorized to perform a marriage must be able to do so. McNeill added that her bill is similar to language in the marriage laws of four other states. The bill was referred to the House Judiciary Committee.
