HARRISBURG – Berks County Rep. Matthew Guzman, Jr. plans to introduce legislation to have PA join the Interstate Compact for School Psychologists. The Compact allows licensed school psychologists to obtain equivalent credentials and practice across member states, reducing barriers to licensure and expanding school access. In his co-sponsorship memo, Guzman says access to school psychologists is critical for students’ academic, social, and emotional success. Yet PA schools face severe shortages. The National Association of School Psychologists recommends one school psychologist for every 500 students, but the national average is nearly double that. By joining the Compact, PA would strengthen its commitment to student mental health, improve access to high-quality school psychological services, and addresses critical workforce gaps. Seven states have already enacted similar legislation.
