HARRISBURG – The PA Senate Law and Justice Committee held a hearing to discuss legislation to legalize marijuana for recreational use in the Commonwealth. Majority Committee Chairman, Sen. Mike Regan of Cumberland & York Counties began circulating a co-sponsorship memo late last year to authorize marijuana use for adults 21 years of age and older; establish a new regulatory control board; remove penalties for use and possession by adults; and protect the Commonwealth’s medical marijuana program. Regan has said an anticipated $1 billion in tax revenues would come from legalization of recreational marijuana to fund State Police, crime prevention, and after school programs for disadvantaged youth. Law enforcement organizations are opposed to legalization saying significant challenges will result from the unanticipated consequences it has on crime and public safety.
