HARRISBURG – PA House lawmakers approved legislation that would require schools to consider installing panic alarms to quickly respond to emergencies. House Bill 634 would require schools to consider implementing a panic alarm system within their classrooms during annual safety and security reviews. The silent alarms would connect a specific classroom to law enforcement responders and signal a life-threatening emergency. The legislation is also known as Alyssa’s Law, named for 14-year-old Alyssa Alhadeff, who lost her life in the 2018 Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting. If signed into law, PA would join 13 other states, including Texas, Florida and New York, in putting a version of Alyssa’s Law on the books. The measure now goes to the PA Senate.
