HARRISBURG – School bus safety legislation was approved by unanimous vote in the PA Senate and sent to the governor’s desk. Senate Bill 851 was signed into law as Act 19 of 2023. It will extend and revamp the school bus stop arm automated enforcement program. The program, which cracks down on illegal passes of school buses, was facing expiration on October 24th unless the extension was passed into law. Enacted in 2018, the school bus stop arm automated enforcement program has nearly 40 participating school districts that equip 2,500 school buses with safety cameras. Over 4,000 violations were issued under the program for overtaking a stopped school bus.
