HARRISBURG – This week (February 20-26) is Highway Safety Law Awareness Week in PA. PennDOT and State Police are highlighting driver safety laws and urge motorists to put safety first. PennDOT Acting Executive Deputy Secretary Melissa Batula says buckling up is paramount to keep safe on the roadways and is also the law. Batula added that drivers need to focus and put aside any distractions behind the wheel before they head out. The week will focus on motorists avoiding distracted driving, impaired driving, and speeding. In PA, 2021 preliminary data shows roadway deaths increased by as much as 10%, including increases in fatalities in speeding crashes, distracted driving crashes, crashes involving a 16 or 17-year-old driver, as well as unrestrained fatalities.
