HARRISBURG – Legislation establishing a PA Preferred Organic trademark has passed the state Senate. House Bill 157 will establish the PA Preferred Organic Program in statute in addition to the regular PA Preferred Program. The program would be voluntary for current organic producers and any producers interested in transitioning to organic production. The PA Department of Agriculture will administer the program, encouraging producers of PA-produced organic agriculture commodities to meet or exceed USDA National Organic Program standards. It would create opportunities for residents to identify and purchase locally grown foods more easily. The bill heads to the governor’s desk.
