HARRISBURG – The PA House Judiciary Committee unanimously approved legislation that would enhance school bus safety in PA. Senate Bill 65 would extend the minimum stopping distance for drivers from 10 to 15 feet before reaching the bus when the red signal lights are flashing and the side stop arm is activated. It also develops a tiered penalty system for a second or subsequent offense. Current law does not penalize repeat offenders. The bill emphasizes increased education and awareness for motorists by requiring PennDOT to include a reminder in driver’s license renewal paperwork and encouraging school districts to publicize prevention efforts. During Operation Safe Stop in October 2024, law enforcement and bus drivers across 22 school districts reported 131 violations in a single day, underscoring the urgency of the reforms. The legislation now moves to the full PA House.
