HARRISBURG – Legislation designating September 17 as “Constitution Day” in PA has been introduced by Lebanon County Rep. Russ Diamond. The celebration of Constitution Day provides an opportunity for people to learn about the importance of the U.S. Constitution by acknowledging the rights, freedoms, and liberties that U.S. citizens have been afforded. On February 29, 1962, the U.S. Congress designated September 17 as Constitution Day. In 2004, an amendment filed to the Federal omnibus spending bill mandated that all publicly funded educational institutions and federal agencies provide educational programs on the history of the U.S. Constitution on that day. Diamond says it only makes sense that the Commonwealth, the birthplace of America, should also encourage publicly funded schools and universities to provide educational programs surrounding the history of the U.S. Constitution on September 17. House Bill 1782 is before the PA House State Government Committee.
