HARRISBURG – Legislation allowing parents in PA to exempt their children from wearing a mask at school has cleared the state Senate Education Committee. Senate Bill 846 would hand the ultimate decision on masking at school to parents and guardians according to bill sponsor, Sen. Doug Mastriano of Adams, Cumberland, & York Counties. Bill co-sponsor, Blair County Sen. Judy Ward said she’s heard from many concerned parents in her district about the mask mandate and concerns parents have about the health of their children wearing masks all day. The bill would allow parents to overrule any face-covering mandate imposed by the PA Department of Health, a local health department or a school board. The measure was approved on a party-line vote. It would have to pass the full Senate and the House before going to Gov. Tom Wolf, who would almost certainly veto it.
