YORK – York Regional Police Department is warning residents to be vigilant of fraudulent schemes and scams being sent through the mail. A recent scam involves suspect(s) posing as “Prevent Cancer Foundation” utilizing checks for several thousands of dollars made out to citizens dispersed by Priority or Certified mail to make it seem more legit. A letter is attached asking to call a phone number after depositing check and then how to disperse funds back to the suspect(s). (typically by purchasing gift cards and giving the information back to the caller) This is a definite scam and you could lose your hard earned money!!! Be cautious of unsolicited mail or packages from unknown senders. Never provide personal information, such as social security numbers or financial information, to unknown individuals or companies. Verify the authenticity of letters or offers by contacting the supposed sender directly. Don’t send money or provide payment information to unknown entities. If you believe you have been targeted by a mail fraud or scam, please report it to the York County Regional Police Department immediately. You can also file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) online or by calling 1-877-FTC-HELP (1-877-382-4357).
