HARRISBURG – Pennsylvania state Representative Robert Freeman has proposed tax relief for Pennsylvania homeowners. Freeman introduced House Bill 816, which would involve an amendment to the state constitution allowing for property tax “circuit breakers” that would prevent “overload” on taxpayers. Freeman says that helping to reduce the tax burden on Pennsylvanians, owning and maintaining a home would be more accessible. Specifically, the legislation would provide a property tax exemption after the taxes owed by an individual exceed a certain percentage of the household income. The bill is expected to be referred to the PA House Finance Committee for consideration, and since it involves a proposed constitutional amendment, it must pass the General Assembly in two consecutive legislative sessions, and then it can placed on the ballot to be considered by the state’s voters, in addition to needing to be signed by the governor.
