HARRISBURG – Delaware County Sen. Tim Kearney and Allegheny County Sen. Nick Pisciottano announced legislation to safeguard PA workers from the growing dangers of extreme heat. With hotter summers and rising humidity, workers across various industries are increasingly exposed to dangerous conditions that can lead to heat exhaustion, heat stroke, and other serious health risks. The lawmakers say every Pennsylvanian deserves a safe and healthy workplace, and that means protecting people from the growing risks of extreme heat. The proposal will require employers to develop and implement plans to prevent heat injuries and illnesses. The plans will guarantee access to drinking water, rest areas, and regular breaks to help workers cope with high temperatures. Protections would begin when the heat index reaches the 80s and expand as conditions climb above 90 degrees, ensuring that employees are not pushed beyond safe limits. The lawmakers are circulating a co-sponsorship memo seeking support of their measure.
