YORK (AP) – A prosecutor says an officer killed while responding to a York County hospital siege last winter was struck by a gunshot fired by police that also hit an armed man holding hostages. The attacker and West York Patrolman Andrew Duarte were killed Feb. 22 in the gunfire at UPMC Memorial Hospital while several other people were hurt. York County District Attorney Tim Barker announced the findings of his investigation at a news conference Wednesday. He called the officers heroes for rushing in at great risk to save hostages. He said the attack occurred after the 49-year-old gunman, Diogenes Archangel-Ortiz, learned the woman he lived with had died after treatment there. Barker said there was no warning signs Archangel-Ortiz would become violent.
