HARRISBURG – Berks County Rep. David Maloney wants to remind Pennsylvanians that the very first statewide “First Responders Day” in PA history is today. As a result of legislation authored by Maloney and signed into law as Act 87 of 2021, Sept. 27 of each year will now be designated First Responders Day in the Commonwealth. Maloney fought for several years to get the legislation passed into law. Maloney added that the state is unique in that the vast majority of Pennsylvanians depend on volunteers for fire protection and EMS services with 97% of all fire services in PA are staffed by volunteers. With our fire and emergency services suffering from a lack of volunteers, PA’s inaugural First Responders Day could not be more timely.
