HARRISBURG – Gov. Tom Wolf signed several bills into law. One establishes a mental wellness and stress management program for emergency responders who experience post-traumatic stress injuries or traumatic brain injuries on the job. House Bill 1459 passed the state Legislature unanimously. Support for first responders under the bill includes peer-to-peer programs, training for peer support efforts, a toll-free helpline, statewide and regional stress management support, trauma and suicide awareness training, and support for nonprofit organizations offering the services. Another bill helps taxpayers benefit from school property tax discounts and extended payment deadlines. Senate Bill 1125, now Act 75 of 2020, gives each school district the option to extend property tax discount periods and remove penalties for late payments through June 30, 2021. The law gives school districts the power to help more taxpayers who are struggling financially in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
