HARRISBURG – Montgomery County Rep. Greg Scott has introduced a bill to protect student athletes from sudden cardiac arrest, a condition of the heart that often strikes without warning and cuts off blood circulation to the brain and other vital organs. Studies show it’s the leading cause of death among student athletes in PA and across the country. House Bill 1943 would require electrocardiograms for students participating in interscholastic athletics prior to participation and ensure each school building and athletic facility in PA is equipped with an automated external defibrillator, a life-saving tool found to increase the survival rate of sudden cardiac arrest by 50% when combined with CPR. The measure will also strengthen student preparedness by requiring CPR instruction with successful completion becoming a graduation requirement. The bill has been referred to the PA House Education Committee.
