HARRISBURG – A co-sponsorship memo has been introduced by Sen. Marty Flynn of Lackawanna & Luzerne Counties that would require automated external defibrillators or AEDs to be present at any sporting event hosted by a school district. The proposal also mandates that all coaches complete training on the proper use of AEDs. Named “Damar’s Law,” after Buffalo Bills safety and Pittsburgh native Damar Hamlin, the legislation was inspired as a response to the occurrence of sudden cardiac arrest that Hamlin experienced during a recent NFL game. While most school districts in PA have AEDs present in classrooms and school buildings, the bill recognizes the value of AEDs and the increased risk of sudden cardiac arrest amongst students participating in athletic events. The proposal has bipartisan support and is expected to be introduced within a month.
