HARRISBURG – Area state Senators Chris Gebhard and Kristin Phillips-Hill joined PA Treasurer Stacy Garrity to highlight efforts to safeguard taxpayers’ money by addressing waste and further mitigating improper payments made by state government. The two lawmakers will introduce legislation that will require each state agency to perform a review and assessment of each program that is not already subject to the federal Payment Integrity Information Act of 2019 to determine which programs are vulnerable to improper payments. An improper payment includes any over-payment, under-payment or payment to ineligible recipients. Each agency would be required to perform the assessment every two years, and the Budget Secretary would be required to provide a publicly accessible website with detailed information on each agency’s improper payment assessment. Treasurer Garrity announced that in fiscal year 2025-26, the Treasury prevented $1.4 billion in improper payments. Improper payment and other state spending data can be found at the state Treasury’s OpenBookPA website. You can click on the picture below to go to that website.
