HARRISBURG – Chester County Rep. Melissa Shusterman is seeking support for legislation which would raise the age to purchase a semi-automatic assault rifle to 21. In her co-sponsorship memo, the lawmaker cited 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz, the killer of 17 individuals at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, being able to legally purchase a semi-automatic assault rifle and ammunition. Not old enough to buy alcohol, but old enough to buy a deadly weapon, Cruz committed one of the deadliest school shootings in America. Shusterman says her legislation would prohibit anyone under the age of 21 from purchasing a semi-automatic assault rifle capable of holding more than five rounds of ammunition.
