HARRISBURG – The PA House Transportation Committee held a hearing on a bill revamping driver education conducted outside of public schools. House Bill 1244 repeals the 69-year-old Private Driver Education or Training School Act from 1952 and tasks PennDOT with developing a new curriculum and to license private driver educational schools under the PA Motor Vehicle Code. Currently, licensing of private driver education instructors and schools is the responsibility of the PA Department of Education. The certification process for new driving instructors typically takes eight to 12 months in PA, while in New Jersey, it takes several weeks. Supporters of the bill say the law has not been revised to reflect advancements in technology over the last seven decades.
