HARRISBURG – The PA Department of Education announced the creation of the Governor’s School Breakfast Challenge, a three-month program to encourage increased participation in the Universal Free Breakfast Program. Gov. Shapiro fought for and delivered universal free breakfast as part of his first budget, and the Administration is working with schools to increase participation to ensure more students get healthy, nutritious meals to start the day. The Challenge recognizes schools for increasing breakfast participation while implementing sustainable changes that incorporate more nutritious and local foods in their meal offerings. Challenge criteria are listed on the PA Department of Education’s website. On average, over 455,000 free breakfasts are served each day in PA schools with more than 3,000 schools participate in the program.
