HARRISBURG – The PA Senate Aging and Youth Committee approved Senate Bill 936 which mandates the reporting of any infant born in PA with an addiction to opioids. It would ensure the coordination of reporting through the Department of Health, which would track the information and break it down by county in an effort to be more aggressive in combating the opioid epidemic where it is located. Other states have implemented such a reporting mandate and have seen a drop in neonatal abstinence syndrome or NAS. The CDC has reported that nearly one in five pregnant women fill an opioid medication prescription during pregnancy and a child is born with NAS every 25 minutes. In a study of 28 states, the rate of NAS has skyrocketed by 300% between 1999 and 2013. The bill now goes to the full PA Senate.
