HARRISBURG – Dauphin County Rep. Tom Mehaffie and Rep. Jason Ortitay of Allegheny & Washington Counties have introduced a bill to support healthcare workers facing safety and security issues. House Bill 2341, which passed the PA House Health Committee, creates a Hospital Security Grant Fund allowing for not-for-profit hospitals with documented security needs to apply for up to $150,000 in grants annually to be used for a threat assessment or other protective upgrades from metal detectors to trauma kits. The program would be administered by the PA Commission on Crime and Delinquency. The lawmakers say doctors, nurses, and other healthcare staff are facing more and more threats and issues within the workplace. Talk about a potential grant program started after the Feb. 22, 2025, mass shooting at UPMC Memorial Hospital in York County. The bill goes to the full PA House.
