RAWLINSVILLE – Nationwide Insurance and MidAtlantic Farm Credit awarded a grain rescue tube and critical, hands-on training to Lancaster County’s Rawlinsville Volunteer Fire Department to protect against local grain bin accidents. Nationwide’s Grain Bin Safety advocacy campaign has supplied grain rescue tubes and hands-on training to 200 rural fire departments across 30 states since 2014. To deliver the resources, Nationwide partners with the National Education Center for Agricultural Safety to train first responders in a grain simulator. At least four grain rescue tubes provided through the campaign have been used to save lives of farmers who have been trapped in grain bins. According to Purdue University researchers, more than 900 cases of grain engulfment have been reported in the past 50 years with a fatality rate of 62%. In 2020, grain entrapments led to 20 deaths.
